Poppy farmers in Afghanistan say they are sticking with the crop, which produces most of the world's heroin, because it's the only option for them that is financially viable. Insurgent Taliban groups protect farmers who grow the poppy as well as find buyers and in return, they take a share of the profits. Farmers say other crops are over 60% less valuable. This relationship has made it near impossible to stamp out the flow of the drug from Afghanistan to other markets including the US.
